Anurag Kashyap Says Animal Shocked People Due to Ranbir Kapoor: 'Rather Than Being Politically Correct...'
Anurag Kashyap said that the film shocked the audience, perhaps, because they were not expecting Ranbir Kapoor to do this kind of a role.

Anurag Kashyap recently surprised his social media followers by posting a photo with Sandeep Reddy Vanga, calling him a “misunderstood” filmmaker. This sparked questions from his daughter Aaliyah and others. In a recent interview, Anurag explained that he likes Sandeep and can relate to him because both have faced criticism and being “cancelled” for their films like Dev D, Paanch, Black Friday, and Gangs Of Wasseypur. Anurag spoke about the importance of conversation over criticism, noting that he met Sandeep in person to discuss their perspectives.

Anurag said that there were certain things that he liked about Animal. He shared, “The action in Animal was very real. Ranbir Kapoor was very good, the music was great, some detailings were very good.” But he went on to say that the film’s “second half was extremely problematic.” “But what I liked most about Animal was that a stubborn filmmaker went ahead and made an adult film of 3 hours and 25 minutes. He fought and got it released in cinemas. It takes me straight back to Bombay Velvet. It was almost 3 hours long and I couldn’t fight for it, I was on the back foot. I had to cut it and raid it myself. I learnt that being ziddi (stubborn) sometimes as a filmmaker is not a bad thing. If you see the nuances there can be a lot of things, it doesn’t necessarily mean that everything about Animal, I endorse or condone. No. If I have issues I’ll discuss it with the filmmaker,” he said.

He also said that the film shocked the audience, perhaps, because they were not expecting Ranbir Kapoor to do this kind of a role. He said, “Why did the film become difficult? Because everybody’s favourite played the role and he did it with all his conviction rather than being politically correct or diplomatically correct, or correct for a section of things. He went all out to play a person that was problematic all the way.”

Animal was a blockbuster at the box office.
