Chennai: DMK Leader Elangovan welcomed Centre's decision to roll back its decision to make Hindi necessary in colleges across the country. He, however, criticised Centre for imposing a particular language on educational institutions.
"That is what we have been telling. It should be left to the institution and college to decide. Centre cannot impose any particular language on any university. Hindi is always an option for non-Hindi speaking states. It is a welcome measure. I don't know why the government of India keeps doing this - they issue something and then withdraw the circular. Why this arbitrary action and withdrawal of such action. It is unbecoming of the government for BJP.
Speaking on Jayalalithaa's attack on the party over ths issue, Elangivan said,"
A Hindi centre - they are for Hindi. They may recommend anything- but the government should understand issues and decide Accordingly. That centre is for Hindi- I can't stop them from talking about Hindi. We need not oppose that. We need to oppose this."
The DMK and the NDA allies PMK and MDMK had also opposed the circular earlier. The circular asks universities to teach Hindi and English as main subjects at the graduation level.
