The 10 Most Common Foot Shapes: Greek, Egyptian, & More
If windows are the eyes to the soul, maybe feet are the doors? The art of podomancy, or foot reading, goes back nearly as long as palm reading. It’s said that based on your foot type, you can learn a little bit about who you are and where you came from. On top of that, by learning a little bit about what makes your feet unique, you can have an easier time selecting the right shoes for you, too! We’ll cover all of this and more.
Most Common Types of Feet Shapes

The Ten Different Types of Feet

Egyptian If you have Egyptian feet, your big toe is bigger than all of your other toes and each toe that follows the big toe is slightly smaller. This creates a neat and even slant towards your big toe. It also makes it easy for you to fit into the vast majority of shoe designs. It’s the most common foot type and is present in roughly 70% of people. Best Shoes to Wear: Good news! Most shoes are sort of naturally designed to be comfortable for you. Even square-shaped shoes should be comfortable, regardless of the tiny gap between your smaller toes and the edge of the shoe. Spiritual Meaning: You are the master of your fate. You’re a free spirit who won’t be pushed into doing something you don’t agree with. You’re also likely to thrive in collaborative environments, as your penchant for communicating clearly leads to the stuff of a good team player.

Greek The Greek foot is instantly recognizable by the second toe—it’s the longest toe for this foot type, not the big toe. The rest of the smaller toes are sequentially smaller than one another. This is the second-most common foot type. Best Shoes to Wear: You might feel a little bit of pressure when you wear shoes with pointed tips, but you’re generally going to feel comfortable in just about anything. If you want to prioritize comfort, look for shoes with rounded toes. Spiritual Meaning: Creativity and expression are likely among the most important things in your life. You’re a dreamer, a motivator, and an independent thinker. You’re also likely a little more on the private side than your peers—personal space is important to you, and we totally get it!

Roman Roman feet have a much boxier shape than other foot types. The first three toes end at the same horizontal plane, and the smaller two toes are shorter than the first three by a visible margin. Best Shoes to Wear: If you want to avoid foot pain and long-term foot problems, wear shoes with a wider toe box. Any “wide” shoes should feel much better on your feet than the standard alternatives. Spiritual Meaning: You’re likely a social butterfly. You thrive and feel most connected to the world when you’re doing something involving other people, whether it’s networking for a job or just hanging out with friends. You are also likely fearless, expressive, and ambitious—all good qualities for a boss or leader.

Peasant Also known as the “Giselle” or “square” foot type, the peasant foot is a rare foot type where all five of the toes reach the same height. Despite the very rude name, the peasant foot is actually ideal if you want to be a dancer, gymnast, or engage in anything that requires good balance, since the larger small toes help you stay stable when you make quick movements. Best Shoes to Wear: You really want to look for shoes with round toe boxes, but it’s also important to get good arch support. With square toes, your arch will be working overtime to keep your feet stable, so the more support the better. Spiritual Meaning: People with peasant feet are known for being wise, reliable, and practical. You’re likely to be judicious, as well. The odds are high that you’re extremely caring and have a deep friend group, as people are naturally attracted to you.

Germanic With the Germanic foot type, your big toe is significantly larger than the rest of your toes. The other four toes must be the same size and end at the same horizontal plane, although the pinkie toe is allowed to be a little bit smaller than the fourth toe with Germanic feet. Best Shoes to Wear: You may be able to wear just about anything depending on the shape of your arch. However, if your big toe starts to get sore, it’s a sign you need a wider toe box and better ankle/arch support. Spiritual Meaning: You may be stubborn, resolute, and confident, with a dash of introversion. You’re likely capable of tackling obstacles without the help of others, and your self-sufficiency is something other people admire about you.

Celtic The Celtic foot is very similar to the Greek foot in the sense that the second toe is the longest. With the Celtic foot though, the big toe and middle toe must be the same height, then the last two toes must be the same height. This creates a kind of boxy, “staircase” appearance. Best Shoes to Wear: The Celtic foot tends to have a lot of trouble comfortably fitting in modern shoes that don’t prioritize comfort. Look for shoes with a ton of cushioning and support. The wider the toe box, the better. Spiritual Meaning: For you, life is something to be enjoyed, relished, and loved. You’re still ambitious and responsible, but you’re not so stuffy that you don’t know how to loosen your tie and have a good time. In fact, people are naturally so attracted to your energy that you may find yourself making friends everywhere you go.

Asian The “Asian” foot is defined by its smoothness and overall shape. The toes all arch together in a kind of circular shape. The big toe may still be the longest, but the angle of the toes together will still be round—not sharp, like the Egyptian or Celtic foot. A note on the name: This foot shape is more frequently referred to as the Orient foot. However, “Orient” refers to an outdated and offensive term British colonialists used to refer to Asia. Today, the term is widely accepted as a slur, so we much prefer the (still kind of weird, but less offensive) term “Asian” foot. Best Shoes to Wear: Good news! You should have no problem at all wearing basically anything you want. So long as a shoe doesn’t cause you foot pain, you’re all good to go. Spiritual Meaning: You’re dependable, respectful, honest, and ambitious. However, you’re also the life of the party. In fact, you can seem like two different people sometimes! Life is a rollercoaster for you, in the best way possible.

Mongolian The Mongolian foot type is identical to the Egyptian foot type with one very specific distinction. The big toe on the Egyptian foot looks typically round. On a Mongolian foot, the big toe is boxy and square-shaped. Best Shoes to Wear: Like the Egyptian foot type, you really shouldn’t have any problems fitting basically any shoe. Spiritual Meaning: You’re deeply influential. Whether it’s encouraging your friends to make the right decision or simple suggestions at work, people take note when you speak. Just don’t let all of that admiration and influence go to your head!

Norwegian The Norwegian foot type is very similar to the Egyptian foot—all of the toes “ladder” down in size from the big toe. But while the Egyptian foot’s angle is smooth, there’s a jump down in Norwegian feet from the middle to the smaller two toes. Best Shoes to Wear: You shouldn’t have much problem wearing whatever you want. However, if you do notice that you’re experiencing pain in the nerves near the middle of your foot, you’re likely developing Morton’s neuroma, so see a podiatrist to get inserts made. People with Norwegian feet are especially prone to this kind of nerve pain. Spiritual Meaning: You’re the best problem solver people know. You may be a whiz on the computer or the person who always has the next big stock tip. You also make life seem effortless—people look at you and they think, “They’ve got everything figured out!”

Stretched The stretched foot isn’t a different shape per se (A Greek or Celtic foot may also be stretched, for example), but it is important to include. Stretched feet have a large, visible gap (called a “sandal gap”) separating the big toe and the second toe entirely. This gap is caused by widely-spaced bones, and it’s more frequently found among women and people from Australia, the Philippines, and Polynesia. Best Shoes to Wear: You’ll likely feel very comfortable wearing sandals. When it comes to enclosed footwear, look for shoes with big toe boxes. Spiritual Meaning: You’re analytical, decisive, and cool under pressure. You may also have a unique interest in spending time outdoors. New experiences are what it’s all about for you!

Types of Foot Arches

Neutral A neutral foot has a medium arch that is about “half filled,” meaning that half of your arch touches the ground when you walk. This is considered the most “natural” foot shape since it allows you to shift the pressure evenly from the ankle to the ball of the foot as you walk. This is the most common foot type, with around 60% of all people having a neutral arch. Do you have this arch type? With your foot flat on the ground, try to slide a piece of paper through your arch. If you get about halfway there before you feel resistance, you’ve got a normal arch. Best Shoes to Wear: You’ll be most comfortable wearing shoes with firm midsoles. Straight and semi-curved soles will be no problem for you, but you may benefit from extra comfort in the rear of the shoe.

Flat People with flat feet have an uncharacteristic lack of elevation in the soles of their feet. The arch is either nonexistent or so low profile that its functionally providing zero support as you walk. You may have foot or joint problems, and your feet may get sore very easily when running or engaging in other athletics. Do you have this arch type? Walk on some sand or soil with your bare foot. If you can see your entire foot’s shape, you have flat feet. Best Shoes to Wear: You’ll likely benefit from walking shoes with a straighter sole and tons of support. If your feet are especially painful, see a podiatrist to see if custom inserts will help.

High arch People with a high arch have an excessive amount of space between their arch and the ground. This can add excess pressure to the balls of your feet and your toes. You may also be prone to ankle injuries or plantar fasciitis. Do you have this arch type? With your foot flat on the ground, shine a flashlight at one side of your foot. If you can see light shining through on the other side, you have a high arch. Best Shoes to Wear: You likely want really cushiony shoes. Anything especially flat or low-profile will be kind of uncomfortable, although you may have an especially easy time wearing high heels or platform shoes.

What is the rarest type of foot?

The peasant foot type is probably the rarest. There are different studies out there that have come out with different results, but the most common conclusion (and the conclusion in the biggest study we could find) indicates that the peasant, or “square,” foot type is the rarest. Weirdly enough, people with the peasant foot type also statistically earn about 15% more than their counterparts. We’re yet to find the connection between foot size and salary, though.

What type of foot is most attractive?

The Egyptian foot type is generally considered the most attractive. The Egyptian foot, with its perfectly slanting downward toes, is widely seen as the ideal foot shape. It also happens to be the most common foot shape, which probably contributes to its perceived attractiveness. That being said, attraction is always an objective thing, so one person might find a different foot shape to be more attractive! The Egyptian foot type is also one of the best shapes when it comes to freedom of shoe selection, too!
