Minister for Social Welfare B Valarmathi distributed wheelchairs and other aid to the differently-abled at a function held here on Tuesday.
As many as 10 hearing-impaired children received hearing aids with solar batteries, seven differently-abled children were given CP chairs, four wheelchairs and tricycles each were given to the physically-disabled, at the function organised at the Andhra Mahila Sabha. Speakers at the event explained that this event was organised as part of the State Government’s efforts to provide proper facilities to the differently-abled across the State. This, they added, was on the instructions of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
Officials and senior officers of the Department of Social Welfare were among those present on the occasion.
Thirty-seven-year-old Parvathy, who received a wheelchair, said that she had applied for the same with the government in May this year. A resident of Saidapet, she said that it was difficult for her to move around, as her daughter was also experiencing health problems.
Another beneficiary, Johnson, 44, said that he had applied for a wheelchair after he chanced upon an advertisement in a newspaper. “I applied for a wheelchair at Fort St George about a week ago. I am glad that my mobility will now improve.”
Jothiramalingam, an agarbathi seller who received a wheelchair, said that he had applied at a government office in Teynampet about a month ago and was later intimated about receiving the aid.
A spokesperson from the Spastics Society of India said that they had submitted a list of special children who required aid, to the official concerned.
