Twisters has become a summer blockbuster as it features plenty of thrills, but there’s a twist that’s catching fans’ attention. While the film has been getting positive reaction, some viewers were left wanting more after discovering that a romantic kiss between Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell was cut from the final version. A leaked video from the set shows the two filming an alternate ending that included the kiss. It turns out that executive producer Steven Spielberg suggested removing the scene to keep the film from feeling too predictable or cliche. Both Edgar-Jones and Powell recently explained that this decision was made to ensure the movie didn’t feel like it was heading towards that romantic moment.
Speaking to Collider, Edgar-Jones explained, “I think it’s a Spielberg note. I think it stops the film feeling too cliched, actually. I think there’s something really wonderful about it feeling like there’s a continuation. This isn’t the end of their story. They’re united by their shared passion for something.”
While Glen Powell added, “I also think that this movie is not about them finding love. It’s returning Kate to the thing that she loves, which is storm chasing. So that’s what you have at the end of the movie. They share this thing and her passion is reinvigorated, and her sense of home is reinvigorated. I feel like a kiss would be sort of unrepresentative of the right goal at the end of the movie. It is a good Spielberg note. It’s why that kid is still in this game. It’s amazing.”

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Lee Isaac Chung explained that the decision to remove the kissing scene from Twisters was influenced by current audiences’ preference. He found that adding the romantic scene created mixed reactions, not due to the actors’ performance, but because it made the story feel too predictable. Chung, who filmed both the versions, says he preferred the no kiss ending, as it offered a stronger conclusion. He felt that ending the film with a kiss would make the audience believe that the main character’s journey was only about finding romance.
Twisters is a sequel to the 1996 film, which was also produced by Steven Spielberg. The movie also stars Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney and Sasha Lane.
