'Boss Visited Hospital to Check...': Redditors Share Bizarre Reactions by Indian Managers to Sick Leaves
“I had one mentor once who tried to check if I had menstrual pain,” recalled a woman in response to a Redditor's question about how Indian bosses reacted to sick leave requests.

Elon Musk-led Tesla has reportedly taken drastic measures to combat rising absenteeism, with the company visiting the homes of up to 30 German employees who had called in sick. This aggressive crackdown on employees started a chatter on social media, where people began sharing their own horror stories of bosses reacting poorly to sick leaves. One Reddit user took to the platform to ask Indians about how their managers reacted to them calling in sick and the responses are equal parts sad and hilarious.

“Did you have managers who actually check if you’re really sick when you take sick leaves?” asked Reddit user “pranagrapher” on the platform’s “Indiasocial” community.

The user added, “Managers are so used to breaching boundaries and breathing down the necks of the employees. Everyone complained about Indian work culture and called it Toxic. But what Tesla is up to is just the next level of toxicity.”

The question that was shared a few hours ago on Reddit has accumulated over 1,000 upvotes and a flurry of comments.

One individual recounted how their boss visited the hospital to verify whether they really met with an accident.

“I once had an accident and my kneecap got dislocated. Mind you, this happened on my way to the office. When I informed my manager, she instructed me to get to the office for a half day,” claimed Reddit user Abhinav Patel.

To this, the original poster replied, “Not surprised, they get some gratification by speaking like a manager. My manager once gave me a video call to check if I was really on my way to the hospital to see my relative who was hospitalised.”

A woman shared how her boss once tried to gauge whether her period pain was real. “I had one mentor once who tried to check if I had menstrual pain,” wrote the woman.

The original poster chimed in again, recalling a similar situation: “My colleague was asked by her manager if she could postpone taking her menstrual leave on another day if it isn’t too painful as they had a lot of work pending and couldn’t afford to approve her leave.”

Another Reddit user, Madhurima, shared a frustrating experience, “My manager once accused me of faking the reading on my thermometer (102° fever).”

“I once needed to undergo an endoscopy and my former team lead wanted me to work during the procedure without even realising how the procedure is done,” joined yet another.
