CHENNAI: Dispelling doubts about the fate of the new Secretariat complex constructed during the DMK regime, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday said the building would be put to appropriate use.“The DMK need not complain that the people’s money spent on the new Secretariat complex will be wasted… this building will be put to use appropriately,” she said during a discussion on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address. On criticism from certain political parties that she had shifted the State Assembly and the offices of the Chief Minister and a few others from the new Secretariat complex to Fort St George just because the building had been constructed during the DMK’s regime, Jayalalithaa reiterated that she had never allowed politics to creep into administration.Explaining that administrative works could not be carried out efficiently if the Secretariat and offices of the Chief Minister and other ministers were located in two different places, Jayalalithaa said the Secretariat and Assembly hall were shifted to Fort St George only for administrative convenience,.Though the total area of the Secretariat complex was 97,829 square metres, only 47,491 square metres could be used as office space and the rest would be lying vacant, the CM said and added the building was designed more like a commercial building than a government office.
