KOCHI: Brightening the hopes of the families evicted from the banks of Thevara-Perandoor canal the Kochi Corporation has finally decided to rehabilitate them. Steps would be taken  for issuing title deeds to them as per the government order. The civic body has started discussions with the Cheranalloor panchayat authorities to reach a consensus on sharing space for the rehabilitation of the 19 families. In 2007 the civic body evicted 36 families from the sides of Perandoor canal. They were provided temporary shelter in Libra Hotel in Ernakulam North. Of the total evictees, 12 families were rehabilitated in Mundamvely and  five families opted to go back to Thevara. The remaining 19 families are still at the hotel. “We will take steps to issue title deeds for the families as per the government norms,” said Mayor Tony Chammany. The Kochi Corporation had earlier also suggested plans to rehabilitate the families in Cheranalloor where it owns 2.5 acres of land. “The marshy land in Cheranalloor was bought during the tenure of Dinesh Mani as the Mayor. The land was mainly used for dumping garbage. Later,  land filling was done in this area and now it is an open space,” said an official with the Kochi Corporation. However, he said that the Cheranalloor panchayat authorities initially objected to the plan to rehabilitate the Perandoor canal evictees there. “The Kochi Corporation has promised the panchayat authorities that it will hand over one acre of land if the latter allows them to rehabilitate the evictees there. The discussions in this regard are going on and the civic body is hopeful of getting a positive response,” said the official. However, the possession certificate of the land will be owned by the Corporation. As per the plan, the Corporation is planning to give 1.5 cents of land to each family along with `2.45 lakh.  The plan is to give `1 lakh  from the Land Tenure Fund, `70,000 from the Rehabilitation Fund and `75,000 will be allotted under the EMS Housing scheme.
