KOCHI: Sunday was a turning point in the life of V M Sampath Kumar, the 51-year-old Vaikom councillor. He was among 150 candidates who took oath at the Advocate’s Enrollment Ceremony held at the Kerala High Court.“I passed my second year of law in 1987. But in 1988, I discontinued and became a councillor. So my wish to become an advocate was put on the back burner since then. It feels good to have accomplished the feat after so many years.”, Kumar said. All these years, Sampath Kumar went on to take up various positions including the vice-chairman of the Municipal Council. “I did not practice law directly but I also did not alienate myself from the field of law. As a councillor, I was involved in public life. Time and again, I was involved in a number of cases. This helped me to understand the problems and issues faced by the public. I hope to utilise this experience in my profession,” Kumar said.“At this age, one does not get into a profession looking at the remuneration. I hope to make use of my position as an advocate to address cases which are often left ignored,” he added.Kumar also said that he will not give up his position of a councillor. “I intend to take up practising law seriously. But that doesn’t need me to give up the position of the councillor. There is a scope to do both together,” he said.Kumar is not new to multitasking. For 16 years, from 1983-96, Sampath Kumar has been a part of Veekshanam newspaper. He is also an executive member of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists. The enrollment function took place in a packed auditorium at the High Court and had more than 150 advocates and their families. The oath was administered by the chairman of the Bar Council K N Anil Kumar. The enrollment address was given by Justice V K Mohanan, the Kerala High Court Judge.
