Ace filmmaker Karan Johar is known for his larger-than-life films. Starting with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998, he has directed films like Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, My Name Is Khan, Student of the Year, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The common factors between all these films were their big budgets, huge star casts and massive sets. Do you know that before Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, KJo was all set to direct a magnum opus period film which unfortunately got shelved? Previously titled Takht, the director made a grand announcement of the film back in 2019, which was reportedly said to be his dream project. The film was planned to go on floors in March 2020, but it was halted owing to the Covid-19 pandemic in the country. The film was supposed to feature Ranveer Singh, Vicky Kaushal, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Anil Kapoor in the lead roles.
It was reportedly based on the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and his brother Dara Shikoh. Earlier, Takht was announced to hit the big screens on December 24, 2021.
Due to Covid-19, the shooting of the film faced multiple postponements. Not just this, but also due to the infamous nepotism debate in Bollywood, Karan Johar faced massive social media trolling; and because Takht featured star kids like Alia Bhatt and Janhvi Kapoor, it was reported the makers decided to keep the film on the back burner.
Earlier in 2021, in an interview, Karan Johar shared that Takht is not shelved and he will be making that film immediately after Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. “That film is a piece of my heart. It’s got two and a half years of my prep work on it. We were preparing to go. I still remember we were starting on April 24 when the pandemic hit us in March. The film was so enormous, voluminous, and complex that it required a thousand workers on site every day. It was that kind of movie,” he said.
It’s been more than a year since the release of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt-starrer Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, but the makers have still not shared any update on the magnum opus Takht. On his 51st birthday, Karan Johar announced his new directorial project. The title and the cast of the film has not been revealed yet.
