CHENNAI: The State government has ordered both criminal and departmental proceedings against certain officials of the Central Prison in Cuddalore, who caused the death of a prisoner in 2009. The goverment, by an order dated August 5 this year, had directed the Cuddalore District Collector to take criminal action and the Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) to initiate departmental action against the officials responsible for the death of Amul Babu alias Amul on August 4, 2009.A copy of the GO was produced before Justice D Hariparanthaman of the Madras HC on Tuesday in connection with a writ petition praying for action against the perpetrators of the crime and seeking adequate compensation to Amul’s family.The order follows a report filed by the inquiry officer stating that Amul’s death was not a case of suicide and that it was a murder, the recommendations of Cuddalore District Collector and a direction from the State Human Rights Commission.The accused persons are M Balasubramanian, Sivakozhundhu, Sivaprakash, Mandiramurthy, Ganeshan, M Ramakrishnan, M Maruthapandian, Sekar, Jagannathan, Natarajan and Jayaraman.Amul had been arrested in connection with a case registered by Puliyanthope police and he was lodged in the central prison in Vellore. He was transferred to Cuddalore prison in July, 2009. When Amul, who sustained serious injuries inside the prision, was taken to a hospital, he died on the way on August 4, 2009.
