New Delhi: Two days after he called in top BJP leaders to discuss the Indo-US nuclear deal at length, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday hailed the US move to enact a law on civil nuclear cooperation as an 'important step' and claimed that it was vital for enlarging India's developmental options.
Inaugurating the fifth 'Pravasi Bharatiya Divas' in New Delhi, the Prime Minister made it a point to thank the Indian-American community for playing a role in this endeavour.
"We are happy that the United States has adopted a legislation that will enable the US to engage in cooperation with India in the field of civil nuclear energy," Singh told the 1,200-strong congregation of Indian Diaspora.
He said the US action would enable that country to engage in civil nuclear cooperation with India as also other members of the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group.
The Henry J Hyde US-India Peaceful Atomic Energy Cooperation Act, which became law in December, "is an important step forward not just in India-US bilateral relations. It is also an essential first step that will enable India to engage in cooperation in the civil nuclear field with other countries that are members of the NSG," Dr Singh said.
