KOCHI: As part of a global initiative to cope with climate change and have a cleaner tomorrow, Kochiites participated in a clean up activity held on the Fort Kochi beach recently. The activity was part of ‘2012 Clean WORLD Movement’ which was hosted across the world on the same day by International WeLoveU Foundation, a global welfare organisation.Over 40 people including school and college students, housewives, office-goers and children participated in the activity. Trash and washed off debris like cigarette butts, bottles, wrapping papers, scraps, plastic bags etc were collected in sacks.By the end of the event, the participants had cleared the beach off 50 sacks of garbage.Fort Kochi Councillor Antony Kureethara, who was among the participants, said that the programme not only helped to clean up the surrounding, but also helped to create awareness among the public on how to protect the environment.“It is amazing for all the countries around the world to participate in the ‘Clean WORLD Movement’ at the same time. I feel great to have helped in cleaning the environment with the help of my family,” said Nesaraju Mathew Paul, a participant.Organisers opined that more people should participate in such activities as part of their duty to protect the environment with a sense of responsibility. The International WeLoveU Foundation will also be holding other large scale events to help climate refugees from Tuvalu, an island country in the South Pacific Ocean which is gradually sinking owing to the rising sea level due to global warming.
