Bhubaneswar: Legislators of Orissa's ruling BJD-BJP coalition on Wednesday demanded a ban on the sale of soft drinks, including Pepsi and Coca-Cola, in the state.
The demand came in the wake of a NGO's claim that they contained high levels of pesticide residues.
Raising the matter in the Assembly through a special mention, BJD member Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak said the government should initially ban the sale of such drinks in educational institutions.
The Rajasthan Assembly had prohibited the sale of soft drinks in its precincts, while the governments of Madhya Pradesh and Kerala had banned the drinks in educational institutions, he said.
Sanchita Mohanty of the BJP said a ban had been imposed to some extent in some states and the Orissa government should follow suit "at least in educational institutions".
BJD member Ananta Das went a step further by demanding that the sale of these drinks should be banned in the entire state.
