CHENNAI: Retired judges of the Supreme Court should supervise the arrangements for a free and fair poll to the local bodies in Tamil Nadu, the DMK appealed to the State Election Commission on Friday. In a memorandum to TN State Election Commissioner S Ayyar,  DMK legal wing secretary R S Barathi urged him to requisition the services of retired apex court judges. The DMK leader also wanted him to take several other measures to ensure free and fair polls in the State.Deploying sufficient strength of paramilitary forces at every polling booth, setting up district monitoring committees headed by retired High Court judges, restraining the State police from entering polling booths on the day of election were among the other measures the DMK wanted the State poll panel to implement.“The State Election Commissioner should be available round the clock to receive complaints. Necessary arrangements must be made for complete video coverage of polling.”Making sweeping allegations and casting serious aspersions on Ayyar, Barathi accused him as being picked up and appointed as the State poll chief to “promote the interest” of the AIADMK.“The DMK is fully aware that you are a close associate of N Sasikala, who is closely connected to the Chief Minister. You have planned to sabotage the free and fair poll. You alone cannot be allowed to conduct the elections and it shall be under the supervision of independent observers,” he said.
