KOCHI: With the UDF government back in power, the student organisation Kerala Students Union (KSU) is gaining momentum on the campuses of the state.The campuses, which were ones the monopoly of the Student Federation of India (SFI) are now witnessing KSU activities also. But now, this has led to several violent disputes between both the party activists turning the campuses turbulent.“The KSU has become a strong hold youth front on the campuses now. The performance of the party in the university union elections has improved and this can be an indication of the popularity of our youth front. We have more than 500 units throughout the state and over one lakh registered members,” Hibi Eden MLA said.“SFI dominance in the campuses will face severe challenge in the coming days. Our organisation has raised voice against the violence. We have promoted the democratic way of student politics, which is now welcomed by student community,” Eden added.But the ongoing rivalry between KSU and SFI is threatening the peaceful atmosphere on the campuses.SFI leadership in the state refuses to attribute its resistance to the KSU’s emergence as the reason for the incidents of violence on campuses. Instead, the SFI leaders alleged that the clashes were a result of a conspiracy to damage the SFI’s image among the people.SFI state secretary P Biju blamed the KSU for disturbing the peaceful atmosphere in colleges. “The police and the government are protecting the KSU youth workers, who create violence in colleges. The police arrest SFI activists and charge criminal cases for protesting against the wrong educational policy of the government. While KSU members taken into custody are released, “ he said.He said that the SFI never resisted the growth of KSU on the campuses.
