KOZHIKODE: Long gone are the days when school teachers had to carry heavy reference books for preparing notes and charts. With the classrooms going electronic, the students get to easily learn their subjects through the presentations that teachers have prepared on their laptops. All thanks to the‘Laptop for Every Teacher’ programme, initiated by the government for the government school teachers. The scheme, which was kicked off last year, has been well-received by the teaching community. IT@School, which was the initiating agency of the scheme, has already distributed around 10,000 laptops and notebooks to school teachers in the state at a subsidised rate. “The initiative is a success story. There is zero-liability for the government in the scheme and no loan was availed for the purpose. Teachers bought the computers at a highly subsidised rate,” says Anvar Sadath, executive director of IT@School mission. Through the scheme, teachers of government schools can buy the laptops for `17,770, which is around 40% subsidised from the market value. “Another major add-on for the teachers in the deal is they get direct services from the company in case of any complaint in the laptops. But there have been only a very few complaints about the laptops that have been bought,” added Sadath. The providers of the laptops for teachers are the companies Wipro, Chirag and HCL who won the bid by quoting the lowest price for the computers. The initiative which started as a part of the Information and CommunicationTechnology (ICT) in schools scheme, makes sure that the traditional tools of teaching are replaced with modern technology. “The teachers now get to prepare for their class with the help of the computers which helps the students to understand their subjects like science and mathematics better than in blackboard learning. Teachers also benefit as they can keep track of the latest advancements in the teaching field with the computers,” said K Kamalam, deputy director of Education, Kozhikode.
