VELLORE: The Vellore unit of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) wing has outdone its counterparts in other districts of the state by exposing the underhand deals of government employees over the last one year. The unit, which covers both Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts, has succeeded in trapping as many as 15 corrupt officials and their conduits. The unit, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police M. Balasubramanian, has also seized unaccounted money to the tune of `31.95 lakh during surprise checks at various places and registered case against 11 officials. This includes `23 lakh seized from the headmaster of Subramania Sasthiriyar Higher Secondary School at Arni in Tiruvannamalai district on March 5. “It is the biggest seizure of cash during a surprise check by the DVAC wing in the state,” said a senior police officer.“The Vellore unit has been good at laying traps. They have succeeded in all the 12 surprise anti-corruption operations they had planned and caught as many as 15 officials and three brokers red-handed. When compared to other districts, the Vellore unit has done a good job. The team has seized over `30 lakh in six surprise checks,” said a senior police officer from DVAC. They have been able to trap officials attached to the revenue department, the electricity board, PWD, health and police departments for demanding bribes from the public. The unit has also exposed corruption in the recruitment of teachers in government aided schools. “As a unit, we thoroughly investigate each complaint and ensure that there is no personal or professional enmity between the accusers and accused. We do this before initiating action,” a DVAC official said.Citing an example of the department’s persistence, he said that they shadowed the district manager of a TASMAC shop, Kanniah, in Tiruvannamalai for nearly five months before pinning him down.
