CUTTACK: Absence of a casualty/emergency facility at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Post-Graduate Institute of Paediatrics (SVPPGIP), better known as Sishu Bhawan, has drawn the attention of the High Court appointed Advocates Committee, which visited the hospital on Saturday. The Committee comprising amicus curie PR Das, Tarananda Patnaik, Dr PK Pradhan and Ajoy Mohanty went around the departments and facilities of the 250-bed premier paediatric speciality hospital of the State and held discussions with the authorities on the pressing problems and shortcomings. The major drawback that came to notice was the lack of a full-fledged Casualty department that significantly affects patient-care services. Patients coming in beyond the normal OPD and office hours are facing immense problems in gaining entry and getting proper care. They are being attended to by doctors on emergency duty or on night duty as a result of which confusion prevails very often. The Committee was apprised of the Sishu Bhawan’s inability to start the facility owing to staff shortage. At least four more doctors are required to manage the Casualty department. The Committee also took note of staff inadequacies in different departments. Surgeries are curtailed due to lack of anaesthesiologists. The diagnostic services like X-rays, pathology and microbiology are also not provided after normal office hours posing great problems to the patients. The services should be rendered round-the-clock and to make it possible additional personnel, including doctors, appointed. A report would be submitted to the High Court, Das said.
