The civil services exam is one of the prestigious and difficult examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. Despite its toughness level, many candidates manage to clear it with their perseverance and determination. One of them is the Tripti Kalhans, a candidate from the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Tripti faced several roadblocks in her preparation journey and failed 4 times in the exam. She didn’t lose hope and cracked the exam in her 5th attempt. This space articulates her successful journey to clear the UPSC civil services exam.

Tripti completed her preliminary education from Gonda. She wanted to become an IAS officer after passing the UPSC exam during her school days. Tripti did not think of any other backup option than UPSC. She had decided to prepare for this exam after spending 3 years of her college life. During her college time, she did not want to bear the stress of preparing for the civil services, as she had an idea of the difficulty level of this paper.

Focussed on self-study

After passing class 12th from Gonda, Tripti arrived in Delhi. In 2017, she secured a Bachelor of Commerce Honours degree from Kamala Nehru College, Delhi University. After this, she started preparing for the UPSC Civil Services examination via self-study. She could not even pass the UPSC Prelims exam in her first three attempts. Due to this, she started losing confidence and became depressed.

Preparation pressure

Preparing for the UPSC exam without any guidance for three consecutive years was a big task for her. Tripti faced a lot of doubt because of not clearing the prelims exam. During this time, she also faced pressure from family members and relatives to clear the exam, which also impacted her preparation. She failed in the 4th attempt as well and took a break from the exam cycle in 2022. This was very important for her.

Tripti regained confidence after this break and got time to understand the UPSC exam. Finally, her hard work and sacrifice paid off and she became successful in UPSC CSE 2023 with All India Rank 199. She said in an interview, “When good days come in life, then we understand why God gave us so much trouble.” She advises all UPSC aspirants to prepare calmly and remain confident.
