Mumbai: In the backdrop of spurt in cases of swine flu in the city and the death of a woman, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday asked state government to close all schools, colleges and theatres for eight days to avoid spread of the H1N1 virus.

"The Government should close down these places for eight days as Mumbai is under attack by the swine flu and it can spread very fast in the metropolis," he said.

A 53-year-old woman, Fahmida Panwala, who was diabetic and suffering from hypertension, succumbed to swine flu on Saturday afternoon in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, expressing concern over swine flu situation in the state, which reported three deaths due to the HINI virus, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on Saturday admitted that the situation was serious.

"The situation is serious and the government is making all efforts to tackle it," Chavan said.

On the death of 53-year-old Famida Panwala, the first casualty of swine flu in Mumbai, Chavan said efforts should be taken to locate suspected swine flu cases quickly.

"It is not possible to detect all cases, that is why those with symptoms should be admitted to the hospital," he said.
