CHENNAI: In the wake of a freak accident on Kamarajar Salai near Marina Beach, where a civic body-installed steel bus shelter came crashing down, Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan on Tuesday ordered a detailed inspection of all such bus shelters to avoid such incidents in future.According to Corporation sources, top officials from the bus route roads (BRR) department on Tuesday surveyed all steel bus shelters installed on Kamarajar Salai and elsewhere by the civic body and took note of their condition and scope for improvement. “The bus shelter that came down near Kannagi Statue (on Monday) was mainly due to missing bolts, that used to keep the structure intact,” Karthikeyan told Express.Besides, the inspection by officials on the crashed shelter also revealed that the structure had corroded to an extent, he added. Being close to the seashore and exposed to salty wind almost throughout the day, such structures often tend to develop corrosion.“We have advised our zonal officials to register a complaint with the local police on the missing bolts,” Karthikeyan said. With the chances of corrosion remaining high on the shelters located along the Marina stretch, the Corporation has planned to strengthen them with anti-corrosion coatings. After the survey, officials decided to strengthen the remaining steel bus shelters by putting up a new layer of welding over the bolts to prevent thefts in future.
