BANGALORE: Mechanical engineering students from Bangalore have landed with an opportunity and be part of a team to design a car keeping in mind the theme of the competition — design for sustainable urban transport for 2030. PESIT is the only college from Bangalore at the Sustainable Urban Transport for 2030 in Vancouver Global Forum of PACE (Partners in Advanced Collaborative Engineering).PACE is a corporate initiative of GM, Autodesk, Hewlett-Packard, Oracle and Siemens, with contributions from companies  like Altair Engineering, 3D Connexion and MSC Software, among others.Seven teams will be competing at this prestigious event from across the world. Each of the teams comprises five universities, each  team consisting of one design institute and four engineering institutes. That would make it 35 teams from across the world.Among the seven teams PESIT is slotted at three and will be heading its team. Each functioning/design of the car has been divided among all its members. While PESIT has chosen to design the car’s propulsion, energy and steering systems; SJCE, Mysore will be  in charge of the networking integration and the HVAC. Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico is given charge of the suspension and  braking systems. Michigan Technological University, USA is handling the electronics and the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) of the car. National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, will be in charge of the actual design of the car which includes the exterior body and the interiors features.“We have taken up the challenge to design a car for the roads of Ahmedabad,”  said team member Vishwanath M. When asked why Ahmedabad was chosen when there were other countries  participating, he said, “According to the market research survey done by NID in Ahmedabad, we felt this car was best suited for those roads. As far as other countries are concerned, they follow certain lane systems. We thought Indian roads would be apt.”PESIT’s  PACE team comprises Viswanath Meenakshisundaram, Puneeth K B, Vishwas Bolanthur Pai, Royston Fernandes,  Varun Balkrishna Rao and Shrutakakeerti Mallikarjun Vagishwari. The project is guided by Prof Satish S V from the mechanical engineering department. It has taken over a year for the students to work on this project. “They’ll be presenting papers this year. In 2012, the team will manufacture the vehicle, and in 2013 the optimisation of  the vehicle will be done,” said Prof Satish. The seven team’s final designs will be presented at the forum to be held from July 27 to 30,  2011 at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.
