New Delhi: The Delhi Municipal Corporation has been rather reluctant to target illegal encroachments by politicians and bureaucrats in the city. This time its the turn of a BJP politician to flout MCD norms in the capital.
But Rajesh Bhatia, BJP functionary dismisses this saying: "I am not the only one who has flouted norms. There are very many such people. You will only highlight our case because I am a politician."
Rajesh Bhatia's defence is simple. He is not the only one violating MCD's building bylaws in Delhi. The list he says is long.
Bhatia's hotel in Old Rajendra Nagar falls under the mixed land use of the MCD. The MCD allows commercial acitivty only on the ground floor under the mixed land use plan and restricts the top floors for residential purposes. But Bhatia has put all his four floors to commercial use.
Senior MCD officials confirmed that Bhatia has clearly flouted MCD norms. Bhatia calls it a way to earn his living.
"How do I earn my living? Has the governmnet made any commercial centres here? There are no avenues for employment that the government provides. Should I be out on the streets and steal for a living?" says Bhatia
It's been over two weeks and 400 demolitions but the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is still far from making a dent with any of its high profile offenders. BJP's Rajesh Bhatia is just one such address. The question is: Will the MCD ever turn its bulldozers in this direction?
