CHENNAI: Underscoring the importance of ensuring zero hardship to the taxpayers, Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, on Sunday asked income tax officials to be on guard and act tough on tax evaders.Barnala in his valedictory address at the Department’s celebration of 150 years said, “Redressal of taxpayers’ grievances, quick disposal of cases, appeals and claims needed special attention.” The department has issued over 2,65,000 refund payments. It has cleared 75 per cent of grievance  cases filed since the introduction of centralised public grievances redressal system, he noted.The governor also asked the taxpayers to ensure greater compliance in tax obligations.“Evasion of income tax, suppression of income should be dealt with severely. Officials should be vigilant and have an eye on recalcitrant tax evaders,” he advised tax officials.Tamil Nadu has achieved a tax collection of `29,370 crore for the financial year 2010-11. It reflects a growth of 18.7 per cent when compared to `24,745 collected for 2009-10 fiscal year.In the first quarter (as on July 21) of the current fiscal year, the gross tax collection stood at `8,149.  It is an increase of 29 per cent over and above the gross collection of `6,338 crore during the corresponding period last year.Prema Malini Vasan, the Chief Commissioner of  Income Tax (TN and Puducherry), G C Jain, the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Chennai, and C A V Murali of the Institute of Chartered Accountants  of India also addressed  the gathering.Dr V Shanta of the Adyar Cancer Institute, renowned danseuse Padma Subramaniam, Tamil litterateur Sivasankari and actor  Kamal Hassan were among those who were present on the the occasion.
