Andhra Boy Excels In Karra Samu, Dreams Of Spreading The Sport Across The Globe
Razak’s parents, right from his childhood, wanted him to opt for a sport that would make him strong both physically as well as mentally.

Karra Samu, also known as stick fight, is an ancient form of sport primarily used for self-protection. The sport, popular in the state of Andhra Pradesh, has been gradually gaining popularity amongst the masses who usually prefer karate or taekwondo. Originating from Tamil Nadu, where it is called Silambam, it was recognized as an official sport in Andhra Pradesh back in 2022.

Recently, a local boy from Andhra Pradesh’s Ongole district has been making headlines with his impressive Karra Samu skills. Sheikh Abdul Razak has been practising karate since he was 6 years old. His parents dreamt of him excelling and gaining fame in the field of self-defence for which they put him under the training of Venkatesh Devarakonda. While he was excelling in his academics, he made his mark in karate too and earned himself a black belt. Praised by all, he has also participated in competitions in other states and gained recognition and certificates.

Apart from karate, Razak has also mastered the art of Karra Samu and holds the ability to stop 10 people in front of him with a stick in his hand. Razak is currently in class 7 and plans to continue honing his skills in the martial arts. “My goal is to spread the name of India to the whole world,” said Razak to News18 Local. His coach also sounded ambitious with his approach and mentioned, “Razak’s sporting spirit is ideal for children of this generation and both of us will continue to make sure he wins more and more accolades.”

Back in 2022, when Karra Samu was recognised as one of the official sports of the state, many martial artists welcomed the move. “Hundreds of youngsters will have a bright future if they get jobs under the sports quota also now that the sport is officially accredited,” said Mr Bhagya Chandra Yadav, a Karra Samu practitioner who is also the national secretary for Akhila Bharathiya Yadav Mahasabha Ahir.
