A group of scientists at the European Space Observatory has named a recently discovered galaxy after the Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.

They have named the galaxy COSMOS Redshift 7 or CR7 - and while that officially stands for Cosmos Redshift 7, the astronomers added the nickname was inspired by the Real Madrid forward.

The lead astronomer, who hails from Ronaldo's native Portugal, said that the three-time Ballon d'Or winner was inspiration for the galaxy's name. It is "an exceptionally rare object, by far the brightest galaxy ever observed at this stage in the universe," the European Southern Observatory said in a press release.

What's special about CR7 is that it likely contains "Population III," or "pre-galactic," stars, the first generation born from the Big Bang. David Sobral, who led the team of astrologers, told the New York Times that these stars "ultimately allowed us all to be here by fabricating heavy elements and changing the composition of the universe."

Ronaldo, 30, finished the 2014-15 club campaign as La Liga's top scorer with 48 goals - his best ever domestic league total. He also scored an international hat-trick in Portugal's 3-2 Euro 2016 qualifying win in Armenia.

The Portuguese forward has told Real Madrid that he wants to stay at the club next season following the appointment of new manager Rafael Benitez.
