The US Congress has adopted a resolution recognising the substantial contributions made by Indian Americans, specifically graduates from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to American society. It was adopted during the 118th session of the House of Representatives on January 10.
The resolution, introduced by Indian American lawmaker S Raja Krishnamoorthi, highlights the noteworthy impact of the Indian-American community and IIT alumni across several professions and disciplines. Stressing the enriching presence of Indian Americans, the resolution underlines the valuable contributions made by the diaspora, saying that their involvement deeply enhances the country.
“…it is the sense of the House of Representatives to— (1) recognize the valuable and significant contributions of Indian Americans to American society; (2) honor the technology, scientific, and economic innovation attributable to graduates of the Indian Institutes of Technology; and (3) urge all Americans to recognize the contributions of Indian Americans and to appreciate the role Indian Americans have played in helping to advance and enrich American society,” the resolution read.
It referred to a joint statement in June, where US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi affirmed a shared vision of the US and India as among the closest partners globally. It also underlined how both countries have affirmed that technology will play a defining role in deepening the partnership between these two democracies in the 21st century. The resolution stated that IIT graduates are highly committed and dedicated to research, innovation, and the promotion of trade and international cooperation between India and the United States.
This comes as the number of international students from India to the United States has increased by 35 percent between the years 2021-22 and 2022-23. India has surpassed China to become the largest source of international graduate students in the US for the first time since 2009/10, according to the Open Doors Report (ODR) released by the US Embassy last November.
The number of Indian graduate students has increased by 63 percent to 165,936 students, the report said. This is an increase of nearly 64,000 students, compared to last year. Indian undergraduate students also increased by 16 percent. Indian students constitute more than 25 percent of the over one million foreign students studying in the United States.
