A leopard was sighted in Meerut on Friday, in the Kanker Khera area of the city, where a biker narrowly escaped a confrontation with the wild animal. The moment was captured on CCTV camera, showing the leopard crossing the path of the biker just a few steps ahead. The quick reflexes of the biker prevented a potential disaster as he slowed down and stopped his vehicle, allowing the leopard to pass undisturbed.
The man who had the close encounter was identified as Akshay Thakur by Free Press Journal. He immediately alerted the colony secretary about the incident, prompting action from the authorities. The Forest Department was informed and is currently monitoring the situation.
Despite assurances from officials that there is no immediate danger to residents, there is palpable fear in the area, especially among parents of school-going children. The leopard is believed to be hiding in one of the nearby farms, and efforts are underway to safely capture the animal.

Leopard sightings in Uttar Pradesh are not uncommon. In January this year, a leopard was trapped in barbed wire in the fields of the Binauli area of Baghpat. The incident, which occurred in Shahpur Ban Ganga village, caused a sensation in the area. Villagers immediately informed the forest department, prompting a large number of people to gather at the scene to see the trapped leopard.
However, the forest department team that arrived to rescue the leopard was ill-equipped and did not have sufficient resources. Dr Rahul Tomar, who was present at the village, stated that although officials, including the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), were present, they lacked the necessary equipment, as per the earlier News18 report. It took considerable effort from the forest department, with the assistance of villagers, to collect the resources needed for the rescue operation.
Eventually, a cage was ordered, and preparations were made to tranquillize the leopard.
News18 further added quoted DFO Vandana Phogat stating that following the information received, the leopard was safely rescued. However, the rescue operation took some time, and the leopard was sent to Barot for first aid. The leopard had sustained injuries during the incident.
DFO Phogat also mentioned that some villagers mentioned the presence of hunters and snares to hunt wild animals. In response, an investigation committee was supposed to be set up to look into the matter. If anyone is found guilty after the investigation, appropriate action will be taken against them.
