Multinational companies like Meta and Microsoft are known for their lavish office spaces and employee perks. Recently, a group of Microsoft employees flaunted their office space in Hyderabad by engaging in the viral ‘of course’ trend. In the video, they showed various perks of their office like free vending machines, nap rooms, shuttle services, an endless supply of company merch, a multi-cuisine cafeteria, and more. The employees also pointed out how their job allows them to “work from anywhere” and helps them maintain work-life balance. So far, this video has gathered over one lakh likes. The video was recorded at the Microsoft India Development Center, which is a 54-acre property.
Commenting on this video, the Instagram account of Microsoft India Development Center wrote, “It’s a post by our Microsoft employees, of course it’s gonna be wholesome!” An Instagram user joked, “We aren’t Microsoft employees, ofc we are jealous.” Another mentioned, “Show this video instead of boring corporate presentations to make students more motivated to study hard during college.”
Interestingly, many people also took to the comments section to chide Microsoft for its massive layoffs in recent months. Making this point, an Instagram user sarcastically wrote, “We are Microsoft employees-of-course we can get laid off anytime.” Another asserted, “We are Jpmorgan chase employees of course we too have all these privileges and we also have job security.”
As per Microsoft’s website, the Microsoft India Development Center is an energy-efficient campus and has a “LEED Gold Certification for one of its buildings.” The website elaborates that the campus is equipped with “24×7 ambulance & pharmacy, a landscaped 800-seater outdoor amphitheatre, air-conditioned bus services with WiFi connectivity, dedicated banks and ATMs as well as a fully equipped gymnasium with trainers, yoga and aerobics classes.”
While companies like Microsoft build infrastructure and policies that aid the employees to have a healthy lifestyle. Some companies have devised rather unusual ways of taking care of their workers.
In 2022, Japanese furniture specialist company Itoki Corp and plywood supplier Koyoju Gohan collaborated to make a ‘nap box’ that would allow a person to take a short nap in their office. This ‘nap box’ appeared like a coffin which raised many eyebrows.
These “nap boxes” are getting popular in Japan because so many workers nap in the bathroom. Could you take a nap standing up??? #MWP @SeattleWolf pic.twitter.com/1V4tnxmbkJ— Matt McAllister (@MorningWolfMatt) July 18, 2022
Saeko Kawashima, the communications director at Itoki, explained the relevance of this product and told Bloomberg, “In Japan, there are a lot of people who will lock themselves up in the bathroom for a while, which I don’t think is healthy. It’s better to sleep in a comfortable location.”
