New Delhi: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati celebrated a low-key birthday on Monday, breaking tradition of throwing lavish parties and raising huge cash donations as gifts on her birthdays. BSP sources said the party leader decided to make it a low-key affair due to the death of party founder Kanshi Ram.

Mayawati was in Delhi and there was no formal celebration of her 51st birthday. She is also believed to have instructed her party workers to observe the occasion in a simple manner.

In Lucknow, BSP workers distributed 51 kg of 'ladoos' at the busy Hazratganj crossing, while a 51 kg cake was cut at Vikasnagar.

Party leaders said the workers had been asked to celebrate the occasion in their respective districts and hightlight to the masses, the 'failures' of the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government.
