Man held with pistol in Sonia rally
A man was on Sunday arrested for carrying a pistol during Congress President Sonia Gandhi's rally in Almora in Uttarakhand.

New Delhi: Shortly ahead of Congress President Sonia Gandhi's election rally in Uttarakhand on Sunday, a man was arrested for trying to sneak into the venue of the rally with a country-made pistol.

Initial reports said Singh had identified himself as a resident of nearby Bageshwar district. "We are verifying reports regarding his identity," PTI quoted Almora's Superintendent of Police Satish Kumar Shukla as saying.

The police has sounded a red alert across the state, particularly in Haldwani and Dehradun where Sonia is to address rallies during the last leg of her campaign.

Sources say no changes had been made in the Congress President's — who is on a tour in the state to strengthen party's position ahead of the February 21 Assembly polls — itinerary following the incident.

However, security around the venues for other rallies to be addressed by Sonia was tightened and dog squads and anti-terrorist squads are being deployed there.

Sonia also addressed a rally in the state capital Dehradun on Sunday. In a bid to counter Sonia's influence in the state capital, the BJP pitted Bollywood star and MP Hema Malini against her. Hema is also to address a rally in Dehradun on Sunday.

As she campaigned at a rally at New Tehri on Friday, Sonia lauded the role of Chief Minister ND Tiwari in the hill state's development.
