Bengaluru: Looking for new ground after suffering major losses in the by-elections in 2013, the Janata Dal Secular has decided to field former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy in the Chikkaballapur Lok Sabha constituency against Union Petroleum and Environment Minister M Veerappa Moily.
The JDS sources say Kumaraswamy will be filing his papers on Wednesday, the last day to file nominations in Karnataka. He will be the second member from former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda's family to contest this Lok Sabha election. The JDS, which faced twin defeats in the Gowda bastions of Mandya and Bangalore Rural in by-elections about eight months back, is looking for the new ground, where it can re-establish itself. The party usually finds support from members of the majority Gowda or Vokkaliga community and Chikaballapur is one such constituency with a large number of Gowda voters. The BJP has fielded another Gowda -- former minister B N Bachche Gowda -- from here. Moily is on a weak wicket, not just because of the strong anti-incumbency sentiment, but also because he is up against two candidates from the majority caste.
The AAP has fielded a retired DIG of the CRPF Arkesh from the seat. Moily figures in the AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal's list of 'most corrupt' leaders. Moily had then threatened to sue him. Interestingly, H D Kumaraswamy also figures in Kejriwal's list of most corrupt leaders in India.
