Do You Need To Watch Hawkeye Before Delving Into Echo's Story? Producer Responds
Despite Echo's introduction in Hawkeye series, the Head of Streaming assures that new viewers can easily watch Alaqua Cox-led show.

Since the epic conclusion of Avengers: Endgame and the arrival of TV shows like Loki, WandaVision, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Marvel Studios has been merging complex narratives within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With the introduction of a new banner, Marvel Spotlight, the latest addition, Echo, takes a different approach. This five episode series serves as a spinoff from the 2021 Hawkeye series, focusing on the character Maya Lopez, also known as Echo, portrayed by Alaqua Cox. Despite Echo’s introduction in the Jeremy Renner’s series, Head of Streaming, Brad Winderbaum, assures that viewers can easily watch Alaqua’s show without missing crucial elements, making it accessible for those without prior MCU knowledge.

During the screening of Echo, Winderbaum explained, “Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character driven stories to the screen and in the case of Echo, focusing on street level stakes over larger MCU continuity. Just like comics, fans didn’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story.”

Marvel’s decision to introduce the change with Marvel Spotlight happened after valid criticism from viewers who found it challenging to enjoy MCU content. The primary concern was the difficulty for new audiences in keeping up with the chronological release of movies and TV shows, creating a barrier to understanding new plotlines. Acknowledging these concerns, Marvel appears to have carefully considered audience feedback while making Echo and the upcoming shows.

The third episode of Hawkeye was the origin story for Maya, which explored her connection with Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin, played by Vincent D’Onofrio. While the finale featured a face off between Maya and Kingpin, it ended with a cliffhanger. Meanwhile, Marvel’s latest series picks up right from where Hawkeye concluded. However, before progressing, the show revisits key moments from the 2021 series. The first episode essentially features scenes from Hawkeye, offering insights into how Maya lost her leg, her father (Zahn McClarnon), her encounters with Fisk and even a glimpse of her first meeting with Daredevil (Charlie Cox).

Echo debuts three years after Marvel Studios initiated its TV show journey with the weekly episodes of WandaVision. Serving as the MCU’s tenth series, Marvel Studios has opted for a different approach this time, choosing to release every episode in one day.
