New Delhi: The AIADMK finally woke up from its slumber on Wednesday to join the Ram Setu debate when party supremo Jayalalithaa jumped into the political war and led demonstrations across Tamil Nadu against the controversial remarks of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
She also joined the BJP in demanding the ouster of DMK ministers from the Union Cabinet.
Demanding the dismissal of the Karunanidhi Government for hurting the sentiment on Hindus, the former chief minister led the demonstration at Udhagamandalam. Jayalalithaa had been camping at her Kodanadu estate in Nilgiri district for the past one week.
The Centre should dismiss the DMK Government as it has "violated the Constitution by hurting the sentiments of Hindus," she said. The AIADMK chief also demanded the removal of DMK ministers from the Union Cabinet.
AIADMK workers staged demonstrations also in Pondicherry and in New Delhi as its leaders stressed that it was not against the Sethusamudram project and that its opposition was towards the alignment.
The BJP, meanwhile, continued angry protests against Karunanidhi's anti-Ram remarks and party President Rajnath Singh on Wednesday asked the UPA to dissociate itself from the DMK and sack the DMK ministers if Karunanidhi does not withdraw them.
In Jalandhar, Congress leader MS Bitta asked people to burn effigies of Karunanidhi on the day of Dussehra. "The statements of Karunanidhi against Lord Ram and the Ram Setu are attempts to spread religious terrorism," he said.
