New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh politics is taking new twists and turns every day. First Samajwadi Party General Secretary, Amar Singh, had put forward the name of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan for the post of the president.
Ridiculous as the idea was, it got the popular support of the so-called 'Third Front' including Samajwadi Party, Telegu Desam Party, AIADMK and Asom Gana Parishad.
Amar Singh has been very vocal in his views of not having a Congress man for the post of the President.
He has now forwarded the name of CPI-M leader and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee for the post of the President.
"We will support Chatterjee for the post of President of India. The way CPI-M and other Left parties have suported us in Uttar Pradesh, we will definitely support him", Amar Singh was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
He said the whole strategy behind Congress' move to impose President's rule in the state was to keep away SP-Left votes by neutralising their votes in the Presidential polls.
Asked how he presumed that elections will not take place after dismissal of Mulayam Singh government, Amar Singh said he came to know from reliable sources that Congress will not hold elections at least for six months.
