Palakkad: Kerala Chief Minister and CPM veteran V S Achuthanandan on Thursday filed his nomination seeking re-election from Malampuzha in Palakkad district for the April 13 Assembly elections. Achuthanandan (87) filed his papers before returning officer A N Pradeepraj. He was accompanied by former Lok Sabha member N N Krishnadas and local party functionaries.
The Marxist stalwart is seeking election from Malampuzha for the third consecutive time. The segment had always been loyal to the CPI(M) and those who were elected to the Assembly from there included former chief minister late E K Nayanar.
Achuthanandan, who is the pivot of the LDF, has been campaigning in the northern districts for the last three days.
Congress has chosen 46-year-old woman leader Lathika Subhash, a debutant in electoral arena, to take on Achuthanandan.
The CPM state unit initially decided not to field Achuthanandan in the elections but reversed it after widespread protests from party rank and file. The U-turn, a replay of the 2006 scenario, came after the central leadership directed the state unit to revoke its decision, factoring in widespread protests, particularly from party leaders and cadre.
The CPM veteran V S Achuthanandan does not own any landed property or any moveable or immovable assets in his name. At the time of filing nomination for the assembly polls, he had cash in hand of Rs 3000 and Rs 80,295 as bank deposits.
The total income of the 87-year-old leader, who entered the fray from Malampuzha segment on Thursday, was shown as Rs 3,43,994 as per the income tax returns filed for 2009-10.
Achuthanandan, who hails from Punnapra North in Alappuzha, district did not inherit or aquire any property, according to the asset details filed along with his nominations.
His wife Vasumathy, a state service pensioner,owns 10 cents of land at Paravoor in Alappuzha district, purchased in 1982 at a price of Rs 18,000, which has a current market value of Rs 1 lakh. She also has gold ornaments of 100 grams
valued at Rs 1,96,000.
Vasumathy has Rs 10,000 as cash-in-hand and Rs 5,70,635 as bank deposits and holds share of Rs 5000 in the Malayalam Communications, which runs the pro-CPM Kairali TV channdel.
