'I Absolutely Loved the Light Show': David Warner Reacts After Glenn Maxwell Calls it 'Dumbest Idea'
David Warner has a different opinion on the light and sound show. The opening batter, who also got a hundred against the Netherlands, said he absolutely loved it.

New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium has been witnessing some mind-blowing encounters in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 and the latest one saw Australia securing the second-biggest win in the ODI format. After setting The Netherlands a humungous target of 400 runs, the 5-time champions bowled out the Dutchmen for 90 to win the game by a huge margin of 309 runs.

Following Australia’s remarkable win in Delhi, the stadium was lightened up with colourful fireworks and a light show. A pounding sound and light show was also carried out in the middle of the Netherlands’ chase which did not amuse all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who covered his eyes with both hands during the nearly two-minute spectacle.

Maxwell, who struck the fastest World Cup century in just 40 balls, blasted the mid-match nightclub-style light shows, calling it ‘the dumbest idea’ as they cause ‘shocking headaches’.

“Well, I had something like that light show happen at Perth Stadium during a Big Bash game,” Maxwell said after his man-of-the-match knock of 106 off 44 balls.

“And I just felt like it gave me shocking headaches and it takes me a while for my eyes to readjust and I just think it’s the dumbest idea for cricketers. So, I just try and cover up as much as I possibly can and ignore it but it’s a horrible, horrible idea. Great for the fans, horrible for the players.”

However, David Warner has a different opinion on the light and sound show. The opening batter, who also got a hundred against the Netherlands, said he absolutely loved it as it was meant for the fans who gathered in large numbers to cheer for the Aussies.

“I absolutely loved the light show, what an atmosphere. It’s all about the fans. Without you all we won’t be able to do what we love,” Warner posted on microblogging site X.

Maxwell’s 106 off 44 balls laced with nine fours and eight sixes fired Australia to 399-8, a total their bowlers defended easily as the Dutch were dismissed for just 90 in 21 overs in New Delhi.

Five-time winners Australia bettered their previous margin of World Cup victory — against Afghanistan by 275 runs at Perth in 2015.

India holds the ODI record for the highest margin of victory when they hammered Sri Lanka by 317 runs in Thiruvananthapuram earlier this year.
