Chamkila FIRST Review Out: The early reactions to Imtiaz Ali’s Netflix film ‘Chamkila’ starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra are out, and it seems the audience is super impressed by the musical biopic. With Chamkila, director Imtiaz Ali takes us back into the life and time of late legendary singer, Amar Singh Chamkila, “Elvis Presley of Punjab”.
On Monday evening, Netflix, along with MAMI, organised a preview of Chamkila which saw many celebrities including Mrunal Thakur, Avneet Kaur, Shweta Basu Prasad, Ishwak Singh and Bhuvan Bam in attendance. After the screening, Shweta and Ishwak shared their reviews and called Chamkila “a must-watch”.
Sharing the review with MAMI team, Shweta said, “I’ll definitely recommend other people to watch the movie. It was like a live concert film. I just know the person (Amar Singh Chamkila) so much better. I think people should watch it for Diljit, Imtiaz sir and the music. It’s so well-made.”
Ishwak shared: “It has to be on everyone’s must-watch list. It’s a very special film. It’s very inspiring, moving and rooted. And, it’s got Imtiaz Ali’s spunk and wildness.”

Chamkila chronicles the life of the iconic Punjabi vocalist who met a tragic end at the age of 27. Diljit recently shared insights into the difficulties he encountered while mirroring Chamkila’s unique vocals.
During a conversation with Film Companion, Diljit disclosed the complexity of emulating Chamkila’s musical style, mentioning, “It was difficult because people have heard Chamkila’s songs like rhymes. So if someone else is singing it, it will 101 per cent look odd. But we have tried and AR Rahman sir’s team has helped us a lot.”
Diljit also illuminated on the playful dynamics on set, particularly how he and Imtiaz Ali played lighthearted pranks on Parineeti Chopra by mismatching the pitch she was supposed to sing at with the musician’s guidance. He admitted, “Even Parineeti, I did not have expectations from her because Amarjot’s part was tougher. Amarjot used to sing in a very high pitch. So, we have tried. I cannot sing like Chamkila and Parineeti cannot sing like Amarjot. We have only tried. Since in the film it is connected to the story, people might like it.”
