Thiruvananthapuram: Well-known author Anita Nair feels that it is better to keep the traditions and customs in the case of the Lord Ayappa shrine.

"There is not much reason for women to go to Sabarimala. If you ask me my opinion, I will say let the traditions continue," Anita told a meet-the-press programme on Sunday.

First of all, women would find it difficult in the hustle and bustle of Sabarimala where thousands congregate in the pilgrim seasons. Also, it was a matter of faith for millions, she said.

Anita said that although she was a believer of Lord Ayappa herself, she did not practice customs and rituals.

A heated debate is on over the question whether women of all age should be allowed to the Sabarimala temple after actress Jaimala recently claimed that she had even touched the idol of Lord Ayappa when she visited the shrine 20 years ago.

Author of works like Mistress, Anita said what was lacking in Indian writing in English was "good, honest writing" barring a few exceptions.

But the situation was different in Indian languages where the writers were closer to the milieu of their works.

She did not believe that writers should invariably be activists and revolutionaries. Instead, their writing should do the speaking, she said. She also inugurated the Press Club Literary Forum.
