Chhattisgarh Mechanic Crafts Electric Bicycle From Scrap To Ease Son’s 20 Km School Journey
The story of Santosh’s homemade electric bicycle began spreading. Soon, it went viral on social media.

In the village of Dubchera, located in the Dondilohara Block of Chhattisgarh’s Balod district, a father named Santosh Sahu found a unique way to help his son, Kishore Kumar, who was facing difficulties commuting to and from school. Kishore studies in the 8th grade at the Swami Atmanand English Medium School in Arjunda, 20 kilometres away from their home. The long-distance travel was becoming a daily challenge for Kishore, but his father was determined to solve the problem.

Santosh, a bicycle mechanic and welder by trade, came up with an ingenious idea. Instead of letting his son struggle, he built an electric bicycle using scrap materials. In 2021, Santosh started working on the bicycle, gathering parts and learning through YouTube tutorials. Within just two days, he had constructed a fully functional electric bicycle powered by two batteries. The bicycle takes about six hours to fully charge and can cover a distance of up to 80 kilometres on a single charge. This simple yet effective solution not only made Kishore’s journey to school easier but also caught the attention of people far and wide.

The story of Santosh’s homemade electric bicycle began spreading, and soon it went viral on social media. People were amazed by his resourcefulness and determination to help his son. As the bicycle gained popularity, Santosh started receiving requests to build more. So far, he has received four orders and plans to begin working on them after Diwali. His innovation has become the talk of the town, not just in the Balod district but throughout the state.

Kishore had previously relied on a school bus for his daily commute, but returning home after school was often a challenge due to the unavailability of buses. Santosh’s decision to build the electric bicycle was born out of necessity and love for his son. He wanted to make sure that Kishore didn’t have to face unnecessary difficulties in pursuing his education.
