ALUVA: The residents in Aluva and Choornikkara were put to untold miseries when the distribution of water was disrupted in the area since Tuesday night. A pumping motor of 250 Hp capacity, supplying water from the Kerala Water Authority treatment plant to Aluva town and Choornikkara panchayat, was found defective on Tuesday. About 15 MLD of water is being supplied to Aluva and Choornikkara from the plant. The KWA authorities in the plant swung into action and replaced a 175 Hp capacity motor pump to continue partial distribution of water. But with the replacement of smaller motor pump, the supply was reduced drastically leaving most of the areas without water. Due to lack of pressure in pumping ,the water could not be pumped to the overhead tank from which the water is distributed to major areas in the town. The plight of the people especially the office going staff and students, was pathetic. They had to run from pillar to post to get water for their urgent needs. The hoteliers too suffered badly without water. Though the supply was resumed on Wednesday evening, majority of the people are still denied water. The distribution wing of KWA throttled back the valves supplying surplus water to different areas and diverted the water to Aluva and Choornikkara. The sources in KWA said that it would take at least one more day to replace the damaged pumpset after repair. The Water Authority, which spends crores on various developmental schemes, has allegedly ignored to keep an alternate motor pump of 250 Hp capacity to replace in emergency situations and ensure uninterrupted supply.
