THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government has liberalised the waste management polices of the local bodies taking into account the grave situation being reported from various parts of the state. Suchitwa Mission, which was entrusted with the task, has been allotted `17.20 crore to be spent this financial year. The new guidelines were issued on February 24, 2012, and the local bodies started submitting proposals for implementing the project. Suchithwa Mission executive director George Chackacherry said that a subsidy of up to ` 5,000 would be given to individuals for treating waste at their households. Fifty per cent of the total amount will be given by the Suchithwa Mission to the local bodies, 25 per cent by the local bodies and the rest will have to be borne by the beneficiaries. “Local bodies have started submitting proposal for various solid waste management schemes. The proposals will be studied and those following all the guidelines will be given permission before March 31, 2011,’’ he said.
