VIJAYAWADA: The city went the Gandhian way on Sunday when scores of people including students hit Bandar road with a kilometre-long national flag shouting slogans hailing Mahatma Gandhi on his 142nd birth anniversary. Various programmes were organised at the Indira Gandhi stadium as part of the Vande Gandheeyam organised by Gandhian global family.A peace walk was organised from Victoria Museum to Indira Gandhi stadium with a peace torch carried by famed chess player Koneru Hampi.Addressing to the gathering, Union minister for health Ghulam Nabi Azad said Mahatma Gandhi will ever remain in the hearts of people for his unique principle of non-violence.Recalling Gandhi’s attachment with Vijayawada, he said that the father of nation visited the then Bezwada ( now Vijayawada) in 1920 as part of freedom movement.In his second visit to the city on March 31, 1921, Gandhiji moved four resolutions at the AICC session including keeping distance from intoxication and drug abuse.This resolution is more relevant now even after 90 years, he said.Speaking on the occasion, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy said that the state was committed to the Gandhian principle that the welfare programmes should reach to the poor.Earlier, Union minister Azad and the chief minister gave floral tributes to the Gandhi statue at Museum.Freedom fighters and large number of people sporting Gandhi cap attended the programme.Gandhian global family vice-president SP Verma, Beena Ben, PCC president Botcha Satyanarayana, minister K Parthasarathi, MPs Lagadapati Rajagopal, K Narayana Rao also spoke.
