Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who recently called time on his international career, asserted that he has no idea of saying goodbye to the Bavarian giants anytime soon.
The 38-year-old keeper expressed that he would like to continue his club career beyond the current season, despite his contract with the Bavarians coming to an end at the close of the campaign.
“I’m not going into this season with the idea of saying goodbye afterwards,” the shot-stopper said.
He opined that a successful campaign would point to him enjoying himself, and that would be a good enough reason to carry on.
“If we successfully complete the season with the new coaching team and with new momentum, that means I’ll be having fun,” Neuer continued.
“And if it’s fun, I’ll definitely carry on,” he added.
The 38-year-old said Wednesday he felt capable of playing for Germany until the 2026 World Cup, but said he was stepping down to focus on Bayern.
Neuer, who clinched the 2014 World Cup with Germany and has been a constant figure in goal for Bayern Munich since joining the heavyweights in 2011, brought the curtains down on a glittering international career earlier in the week and said that it was a tough decision to make indeed.
“Of course, there’s a bit of sadness with the decision, but at the same time there’s a lot of relief,” the World Cup winner added.
Neuer will look to inspire Bayern to the Bundesliga title, after missing out on the top-flight crown in the previous season to unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen, who shocked the world with their dominant style of play under Xabi Alonso.
Leverkusen also ended Munich’s 11-year stranglehold on the Bundesliga title with their heroics, which helped them to their first-ever German top-flight trophy in stunning fashion.
