In the wake of Liam Payne’s passing at the age of 31, One Direction fans have been sharing their most cherished memories of the singer. As he was part of the globally loved One Direction alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, who found fame on the UK’s X Factor in 2010, fans have taken to social media to remember the band’s songs, moments and lyrics that offer comfort in this sad time. Payne passed away on October 16, after a fall from the third floor of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
As friends, family and bandmates reflect on his life, an emotional letter he wrote to his 10-year-old self has surfaced online. In the letter, Payne encouraged his younger self to keep chasing his dream of singing, even during times when it felt out of reach.
Here are a few of the standout memories fans have been recalling.
The Red Nose Day Video
In 2013, the band filmed a hilarious music video for comic relief, covering Blondie’s One Way or Another. They donated their video budget to the charity, helping children in poverty. Even years after their split, the video’s playful moments and the boys’ goofy dance moves are still fan favourites.
Liam Payne’s Spoon Phobia
One of the more quirky stories fans love to remember is Payne’s spoon phobia. In 2011, he tweeted, “I have a phobia of spoons. I haven’t used one in about 10 years." In interviews, he stuck to his claim, even demonstrating how he ate soup with a fork.

“See, I’m not scared of spoons, I’ll hold one," he explained in 2015. “But I don’t like eating with them if they’re not my spoons," he added, as per People.
Louis Tomlinson’s Carrot Obsession
Early on when One Direction was still rising and all its members were quite young, Louis Tomlinson became known for his playful antics in the band’s video diaries. One of the most memorable lines? I like girls who eat carrots. This joke led fans to send him carrots and Tomlinson later humorously revised his taste to include women who like Lamborghinis. The video of all members sitting on a staircase and just chatting with fans has been going viral.
Lyric Changes in Gotta Be You
One Direction was known for playful lyric changes during their performances. Fans remembered many fun and hilarious times when the band used to change a few words from their popular songs while performing. According to People, during live performances of Gotta Be You, fans laughed along as lines were altered to wrong-size shoes, big brown poo, and I love chicken soup.
