KOCHI: The Vigilance Department on Friday conducted surprise raids at the offices of the Kochi Corporation following large number of complaints on the irregularities in various departments.The raids were conducted by a 14-member Vigilance team based on the Vigilance Directorate's instructions.A top official with the Vigilance Department told 'Express' that the raids were carried out after complaints poured in from the public on the corruption plaguing the Corporation offices. "There have been complaints about the Corporation officials demanding money from the people for doing various official favours.""The raids were conducted at all the zonal offices of the Corporation," the official said. The official also said that there were complaints that the Corporation officials were demanding bribe for accepting Corporation Tax on buildings, establishments and other sectors. "It is alleged that the officials after accepting bribe are even issuing various certificates violating the seniority list. We conducted the raids at all the Corporation offices in the state to check corruption and seize documents," the official said. Brushing aside corruption allegations, Kochi Corporation Health Standing Committee chairman T K Ashraf said, "I have not received any complaint against the officials in the health department of the Corporation so far."
