The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) has announced a toll rate hike of up to 12 percent for the 165-kilometer stretch connecting Greater Noida and Agra.
This increase will come into effect on October 1, according to a report by Hindustan Times.
Under the new toll structure:
- Two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and registered tractors will now pay Rs 1.50 per kilometer, up from Rs 1.25.
- Cars, jeeps, and light motor vehicles will see their tolls rise to Rs 2.95/km, up from Rs 2.60/km.
- Buses and trucks will have to pay Rs 4.60/km, an increase from Rs 4.15/km.
- Heavy vehicles will pay Rs 14.25/km, up from Rs 12.90/km.
- Oversize vehicles will face a new toll of Rs 18.35/km, increased from Rs 16.60/km.
Since the Yamuna Expressway opened in 2012, the Uttar Pradesh government approved annual toll hikes until 2015, after which YEIDA was tasked with managing future increases. The recent decision was made during a YEIDA board meeting aimed at allowing the toll operator to collect around Rs 1 crore daily.
The Suraksha Group, which now manages the toll operations following its acquisition of the struggling Jaypee Infratech Limited, has sought a toll hike for three years. YEIDA CEO Arun Vir Singh mentioned that the increase was necessary to meet commitments to Suraksha Group, which plans to revive stalled Jaypee apartments, contingent on the annual toll hike.
According to Money Control, Singh also explained that the toll operator had been facing significant losses in managing expressway operations, making the hike essential. “If we spread the hike of 12 percent over three years, it amounts to just a 4 percent increase annually since 2021,” he added.
The board has instructed the operator to provide traffic forecasts and current vehicle data to better understand expected toll collections on the expressway.
