CHENNAI: While the fact remains that most auto rickshaw drivers in Chennai fleece passengers citing the spiraling prices of fuel, tourist-friendly auto rickshaw drivers are an exception as they have to strictly go by the meter fare, failing which they would end up in trouble for violating the rule. This way, tourist-friendly auto rickshaws evoked tremendous response from domestic and international tourists. "Trust pays us," says Ramachandran, a tourist-friendly auto rickshaw driver. He recalls how a Russian tourist paid him only Rs 100 the first time she hired his auto. “During her second visit to Chennai, she paid more than a thousand rupees, as she felt I was a reliable driver," he said with pride. Apparently, the tourist-friendly auto drivers get decent treatment from the police. “While other auto rickshaws are restricted from entering the crowded T Nagar area, we are allowed to move on without any hindrance. The respectable treatment by the cops is something unprecedented,” another tourist-friendly auto rickshaw driver says.
