Two-year-old falls into storm water drain, dies

CHENNAI: A two-year-old boy died after falling in to a storm water drain filled with rainwater at Sathangadu, near Thiruvottiyur, on Sunday. Police said Kishore, son of a daily wage labourer Kamaraj of Kumaran Street, Kargil Vetri Nagar, Sathangadu, was playing outside his house on Sunday evening, when he slipped and fell in to a storm water drain while trying to see the overflowing water.The drain, which was located opposite Kishore’s house, had knee-deep rainwater, police said, adding that the boy’s father was not at home when the incident took place. Neighbours who had seen the boy fall in to the drain raised an alarm and by the time the boy’s mother Amudha could come out of the house, the fast flowing water in the drain took the boy a few feet away before he could be rescued. He was then taken to a private hospital at Thiruvottiyur where he died. Sathangadu police have registered a case and are investigating.
